Long Beach Residents Build Community Through Weekly Group Fitness Events
Long Beach residents have turned group fitness events into regular meetups that mix exercise with neighborhood connections.
How we reported this

More than 350 residents registered for the July 8 launch of the Long Beach Summer Fitness Challenge at the foot of the Belmont Pier.
The event series runs through Labor Day and draws participants from neighborhoods including Belmont Shore and Alamitos Bay. Organizers from the Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine Department set up daily circuits along the boardwalk and at nearby Shoreline Village to replace isolated gym sessions with scheduled group workouts.
Local venues anchor the schedule
Workouts alternate between the paved path that runs from Ocean Boulevard to the Los Angeles River bike trail and the open fields at El Dorado Park East. On Tuesdays the group meets at 6:30 a.m. near the 2nd Street entrance to the bay for a 45-minute rowing and body-weight circuit that finishes with a cool-down on the sand. Thursdays shift to the park’s 1.8-mile perimeter loop for timed intervals and team relays. Both locations offer free parking and water stations supplied by the city program.
Registration opened June 1 at the Parks Department office on 2760 Studebaker Road and closed after 400 spots filled. The $20 fee covers a printed schedule card, reflective vest and access to optional nutrition workshops held at the Billie Jean King Main Library branch on 2000 Park Avenue. Last year the same program recorded 287 participants; this summer’s count represents a 39 percent increase tracked through the department’s online portal.
Next steps for new participants
Remaining spots for the August segment open July 15 at the same Studebaker Road location or through the city website. Residents can also join a single drop-in session for $5 on any Thursday at El Dorado Park East without prior sign-up. The final challenge event on September 1 ends with a 5-kilometer group walk that starts at 7 a.m. from the Long Beach City Hall plaza and finishes at Marina Green Park.
